Why Locals Love Taqueria Habanero

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Washington, DC’s Petworth neighborhood, Taqueria Habanero is a standout Mexican restaurant that delivers an authentic taste of Mexico City with every bite. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by a cozy, inviting atmosphere where the sizzle of fresh tortillas being pressed and the rich aromas of smoky chilies fill the air—a true sanctuary for lovers of genuine Mexican flavors.

The menu showcases a remarkable range of tacos that are impossible to resist. Favorites like the Tacos Al Pastor boast marinated pork with pineapple, delivering a perfect dance of savory sweetness and tender juiciness for just $4.00. Adventurous eaters will delight in the Barbacoa Taco featuring slow-cooked goat, and the Pulpo Taco highlights grilled octopus with an irresistible char. Seafood lovers can indulge in the Salmon Taco or the plump, flavorful Camaron Taco—each priced at $4.25 and marked by fresh, vibrant ingredients that brighten every bite.

For a heartier dining experience, the house dishes are equally compelling. The Carne Asada is a commanding 16 oz T-bone steak served alongside fluffy rice, black beans, and homemade corn tortillas, making it a satisfying centerpiece for any meal at $33.00. The Fajita Mixta offers a lively medley of seasoned chicken, beef, and shrimp sautéed with bell peppers and onions, wrapped in warm tortillas for $22.00.

Taqueria Habanero also excels in tortas—Mexican sandwiches that are layers of bold flavors packed into fresh bread. The Milanesa De Pollo features a crisp, thin-cut breaded chicken fillet, while the Birria torta is a luscious blend of stewed beef and melted chihuahua cheese, served with a side of comforting beef broth for dipping.

But beyond the food, it’s the little details that make Taqueria Habanero a beloved neighborhood gem. Handmade tortillas are freshly pressed to perfection, boasting a tender texture and subtle corn flavor that elevates every dish. The salsas—ranging from smoky to tangy to fiery—bring a zestful balance that guests keep coming back for, perfectly complimenting the rich flavors of the mains.

Customer testimonials cannot be ignored when describing this culinary hideaway. Brat Wilberstine calls it “one of my favorite spots,” lauding the tacos al pastor as juicy and perfectly seasoned. Such a reliable, cozy and delicious spot to always return to. The freshly made tortillas are always to die for and the salsas are delicious. I love the hongos and nopales tacos, they’re the ones I always end up going back for. All of the food is great, there’s never been something I’ve been disappointed by. I also always go back for their agua fresca.

One of my favorite spots — I’ve been coming here for years, and the food just keeps getting better. Every bite tastes like it came straight from Mexico City. The tacos al pastor are incredible — perfectly seasoned, juicy, and packed with flavor. And the handmade tortillas? Absolute perfection! The guacamole is always fresh, the salsas have that perfect balance of spice and tang, and their margaritas are the best way to top it all off. You can taste the authenticity and love in every dish — nothing feels rushed or commercialized, just real Mexican cooking done right. The staff are always warm, friendly, and quick to make you feel at home. Even when the place is busy (which it often is!), they handle everything with a smile. It’s the kind of place that turns first-time visitors into loyal regulars — just like me!

It took a while for the server to come over but overall everything was great. I ordered from the happy hour menu and got the taco trio and habanero sangria (not spicy, just named after the restaurant). Both were very tasty. I went around 5 and it was pretty chill in there. Great vibes and good music. Will go back again soon.

The best meal EVER. Everything was so delicious. I definitely recommend the signature Habanero cocktail with mescal, as well as the Camarones Enchipotlados. Great service as well :)

OMG!!!! Everything at Taqueria Habanero was beyond delicious! I couldn’t even take many photos because we were too busy inhaling all the food. I tried the pulpo, lengua, camarón, and nopal tacos—every single one was insane! Then came the camarones enchipotlados… ufff, absolutely mouthwatering! We also ordered plantains, guacamole, and chips, and everything was excellent. To top it all off, I had the habanero margarita—highly, highly recommended! Special shoutout to Carolina, our waitress—she was amazing, so friendly and attentive, which made the experience even better. Taqueria Habanero is a must-visit if you love authentic, flavorful Mexican food!

I have been there three times. The first time I had the goat and the octopus tacos both were amazing and unique, though I thought the goat was a little dry. The second time I sat down and had a sumptuous and delicious fajita. And a wonderful margaritaNo complaints there. The last time my partner and I were starving coming back from a late event they squeeze us in with 15 minutes before closing and provided us with the most delicious shrimp and salmon tacos, which melted in our mouth, I have to say that Taqueria habanero is the gold standard when it comes to Tacos.

A very cool little spot! I really enjoyed the decor, and the restaurant itself has great seating available. I ordered the birria tacos, and they were great. They were covered in sauce and pack to the brim. Amazing taste, served hot, and you can tell they make everything from scratch. The real superstar was my waitress. She seemed to be the only one working and she was killing it! I had absolutely no problems with my service despite the large number of customers she was having to cater to. I did find 16 dollars for the tacos to be a little on the expensive side, but I understand D.C is an expensive city. Happy to support a small business!
